Silca Grate™ (Black)

Remodel / Resurface Installation.

  • 1. Remove all horizontal flooring, 5/4 treated lumber, composite lumber etc….from existing deck.
  • 2. CAUTION: Qualified person to inspect all footings and joists.
  • 3. CAUTION: Make sure the header joist is lag bolt or all thread bolt all the way through the box beam.
  • 4. Manufacture's recommendation is to have footings six (6) feet on center and your floor joist 16” on center.
  • 5. If you have ample threshold height you may screw the Silca Grate on top of your floor joist. Much thought must be given to the stack height and desired finish floor height.
  • 6. If you DO NOT have ample threshold height you need to add a 2x4 cleat on each side of the floor joist.(note: maintain correct height while fastening on joist).
  • 7. Trim 1 ½” off the Silca Grate. In lay Silca Grate on top of 2x4 cleat. Note: Silca Grate has two sets of screw holes on one side of the Silca Grate. Trim the side with two holes.
  • 8. Screw Silca Grate in place.
  • 9. Install Geotextile blanket (ONLY if you are going to use Polymeric sand between the joints of your bricks or pavers).
  • 10. Two options for border.
  • a. Brick / Paver Border - Use premium construction adhesive to fasten the brick or paver on the vertical surface of the rim joist (perimeter of deck) keep the vertical brick or paver flush with top of Silca Grate. Then use premium construction adhesive to fasten the horizontal brick or pavers to the vertical brick or paver around the perimeter of the deck. Note: before you glue the horizontal brick or pavers, you may want to lay out your pattern. This will allow you to make some small adjustments to save much cutting time later.
  • b. Treated Lumber Border – Use a wider dimension lumber for your rim joist. (i.e. 2x12 for rim joist standard joist may be 2x8 this all depends on your brick and paver thickness. – Think this through!) Allow rim joist to be above Silca Grate enough to hold your brick or paver.
  • 11. To finish you may wrap/cover the exterior border with aluminum or vinyl.
