Silca Grate™ (Black)
New Deck Installation.
- 1. Determine finish floor elevation.
- 2. Determine brick or paver thickness being use in project.
- 3. Determine joist material size.
- 4. Determine footing (post location) we recommend six (6) feet on center (contact your engineer architect).
- 5. Silca Grate (black) is 1.5 inches thick (Do not use Silca Grate Green on any elevated surface, such as deck, dock, bridge, gazebo, or balcony).
- 6. Build your substructure with 16 inch on center floor joist. For you rim joist see item #10 and determine how you will construct your border.
- 7. (Caution!! Header board MUST be bolted through your box beam or lag bolt. Lag bolt every twelve inches two by two staggered.
- 8. Screws down the Silca Grate (black) recommend that you stagger the Silca Grate joints. (i.e. start with full Silca Grate then on next joist start with a half Silca Grate) Six screws per Silca Grate.
- 9. Install Geotextile blanket (ONLY if you are going to use Polymeric sand between the joints of your bricks or pavers).
- 10. Two options for border.
- a. Brick / Paver Border - Use premium construction adhesive to fasten the brick or paver on the vertical surface of the rim joist (perimeter of deck) keep the vertical brick or paver flush with top of Silca Grate. Then use premium construction adhesive to fasten the horizontal brick or pavers to the vertical brick or paver around the perimeter of the deck. Note: before you glue the horizontal brick or pavers, you may want to lay out your pattern. This will allow you to make some small adjustments to save much cutting time later.
- b. Treated Lumber Border – Use a wider dimension lumber for your rim joist. (i.e. 2x12 for rim joist standard joist may be 2x8 this all depends on your brick and paver thickness. – Think this through!) Allow rim joist to be above Silca Grate enough to hold your brick or paver.
- 11. To finish you may wrap/cover with aluminum or vinyl.
