Silca Grate™
Silca Grate’s secret is in the hexagon.
Honeybees rely on hexagons for their strength. And it is this naturally designed technology that has allowed us to create a super-strong substructure capable of supporting a surface of heavy materials. In fact, Silca Grate™ is so strong, it meets or exceeds both residential and commercial building codes.
Silca Grate™ is a 16x18 1/8 " honeycombed tray made of durable 1½" thick engineered polymer which is screwed directly to the top of the floor joists. Each Silca Grate™ grid covers 2 square feet. It is UV stable and easily cut to form. Its installation is as easy as putting 4 screws into floor joists spaced 16” on-center. Its strong hexagonal cells provide a supportive sub-structure for elevated areas as well as ground applications.
Silca Grate™ provides support every two inches, 360 °.
The unprecedented strength results from the design of the 2” diameter honeycombs which offer 360 degrees of solid support, giving you considerably more muscle underneath your surface materials. These hexagon cells provide support every 2 inches in all directions. Compare that to lumber pieces in traditional applications which typically span 16-24" between joists and only offer bi-lateral support.

Silca Grate's innovative design is certified by a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio (registration number E-034742). Repeated tests prove time and time again that Silca Grate™ exceeds current commercial building code requirements of 60 lbs per square foot by a factor of six times.
Here are some solid statistics. In a test area of only 7 square inches loaded with more than 700 pounds, the deflection was only 0.25 – 0.31 of an inch. To put that in perspective, imagine putting 4 average-sized people on an area the size of a business envelope, and still, the Silca Grate™ only gave ¼”.
